I wrote this tune early in 2020, inspired by a musical fragment friend had sent me. I finished the tune and enlisted some of the best players I know to help fill it out. I am grateful to these collaborators for their playing, and offer it up to you.

Verse 1
Wake up, get the coffee on
That’s all I need to get goin’
five minutes off news on the radio
Need to drive to the hardware store but
havin’ a little trouble gettin’ out the door
I pack it on up and head on down the road
and the young kid ringing me up would probably be alright
but the old man next in line may not be up for the fight

Chorus:
each night brings a different dream
of losing everything
I need to touch you, need to be touched too
rise into this day
try to make my way through
this infectious scene…, yes my hands are clean
I’ll keep my distance it’s OK
we’ve just got to get through one more

There’re two boys walking’ down the road
all masked up and nowhere to go
Mom’s in the garden with a look
Ain’t been to school in six or eight weeks
the energy from off them streaks and dances
all around the neighborhood

This is something different to be sure
normalcy replaced by patterns tougher to endure

I lost my schedule back in March and I can’t remember
who we’re s’posed to play
I guess it doesn’t matter now, its pretty well shot anyhow
football’s just three months away
save the chips and dip for movie night
maybe just one cheer for those on the front line

I saw dad the other day, we don’t always have too much to say
and now we stand ten feet apart
my anger has been rising up, just masking fear
I fill my cup and let the water cool my aching heart
don’t give me your violence and fear
I will not take for granted all that I hold dear
