One of dad's poems I set to music about 10 years ago.

lyrics

A fraction of the road between two hedges,
Behind which the illusion of remove prevails.
All day and half the night the outer world flows by.
All manner of folk, walking, in cars or trucks, on bicycles,
Back and forth,
Just the other side.

Directly across the road, another hedge, pine trees,
Dark green ivy below,
The sky is unusually gray.
A telephone pole with a transformer high above,
The lines slices east and west,
Out of the picture.
The wind is always blowing straight off the Atlantic.
The order here is like the inside of a bottle you can see through.
The presence of time’s order creates the illusion of remove.

The deer have drifted into the back field
And down in the valley below,
They’re skittish in the dusk.
The occasional car enters the gentle curve at the top of the hill
And briefly illuminates them.
A single light glows through a gap in the privet.

While I’ve been watching my step,
The whiskey’s almost gone.
It’s much colder inside now; my thoughts are skittish as the deer
Lit up in the night behind the hedges.
The illusion of remove
