about

I wrote this tune in the Wake of Hurricane Irene and the damage she caused in Vermont. Other than the storm and a couple local references, the story is entirely fictional

lyrics

I write poetry on the porch at night as the crickets start to sing
fry bacon in the morning, as the kettle's blowing steam
I live down here on the flats, second trailer on the right
my folks are out in Grafton, my daughter Sandy's
in the army doing time

Dave and Mary live next door in the house on the right
they keep their snow machines parked out back, they like to take 'em out...on a winters night–but today the water on the fields
ain't frozen and it ain't white
and the snowmobile bridge at the riverbend
is miles away in pieces out of sight

When I was seventeen I had nothing to lose
already on my own-with a real good arm and a pretty little girl
the farm team was what I called home
made it all the way to triple-A before I threw my shoulder out
started down at C&S, let the whiskey clear my doubt

See that van, buried in the driveway? Like a car at The Cadillac Ranch
when the river came through the trailer park, ya know, it cut quite a trench–and you wouldn't want to have to get anywhere in this poor state tonight...bridges are out, the trees are down and they've turned out all the lights

The first bands pushed out the blue on Saturday, right around dinnertime The kids in the last home were horsin' around, I heard one of 'em say, "here comes Irene," by eight o'clock it was comin' down in sheets eight-hundred miles across and tracking north north-east

And the Saxtons came up fifteen feet by Sunday around five–the same thing with the Deerfield and the Williams and the White
There were people losin' everything in Vermont on Sunday night

I write poetry on the streets at night as the crickets start to sing
tonight the stars are twinkling, you wouldn't think we'd seen anything,
Ah, but we've got what it takes to get us through this bitter scene
